How We Got Here

MutualExchange started with a simple question: why is this so hard?

Between us, we've spent years navigating the UK social housing system — as tenants, as professionals, and as people who've seen first-hand how broken the existing home swap platforms really are. Fake matches, dead profiles, notifications that arrive days late, and a process that leaves vulnerable people feeling lost and let down.

We started building MutualExchange.uk because we got tired of waiting for someone else to fix it. The platforms that exist are run by large companies with no connection to the communities they serve. We wanted to build something different — something honest, something that actually works, and something designed around the people who use it.

This platform exists because we know how much a home matters.

MutualExchange was founded by three people who each brought something different to the table — but shared the same belief that social housing tenants deserve better tools.

Lived Experience & Product

Spent 8 years trying to complete a home swap. Managed multiple online swap communities with thousands of members. Heard the same complaints from tenants every single day and decided something had to change. Brings deep knowledge of what tenants actually need — not what a product manager assumes they need.

The Housing Professional

Housing Sector & Compliance

Background as a housing officer with direct experience processing mutual exchange applications. Understands bedroom eligibility rules, landlord approval processes, and the legal framework around tenant rights. Makes sure the platform gives accurate, responsible guidance — not guesswork.

The Researcher

Market Research & Strategy

Background in market research with a focus on understanding what people actually want versus what they're being given. Analysed the existing platforms, surveyed hundreds of tenants, and mapped out every pain point in the swap process. Every feature on this platform was validated by real research before it was built.

How we work

We're a small, focused team. We don't have investors telling us what to build, and we don't have a sales team pushing features nobody asked for. Every decision we make comes back to one question: does this actually help someone find a home?

We work closely with the people who use the platform. We read every piece of feedback. We fix things quickly. And we're honest when something isn't ready yet — we'd rather tell you what's coming than pretend it already exists.

We never show fake matches, inflate numbers, or mislead users to make our platform look better than it is. If there are no matches, we say so. Honesty is the foundation of trust, and trust is everything in a home swap.

Our pricing is simple and published openly. Our data practices are explained in plain English. We're not a faceless corporation — we're a small team you can actually contact. No hidden fees, no dark patterns, no small print designed to catch you out.

Accessibility

Finding a home is not a luxury. Premium is £1.99/month — less than a single bus journey. Free accounts can do everything needed to complete a swap. We will never put your ability to find a home behind an expensive paywall.

We design safety into every feature. No public profile comments. Discreet reporting. Private messaging only. Verified tenant badges. We take threats and harassment seriously, and we act swiftly. This is a community that should feel safe for everyone.

We are not a US corporation

MutualExchange.uk is a UK platform, built in the UK, for UK social housing tenants. We understand the council housing system, the Housing Act, and the specific pressures facing tenants in this country — because we've lived it.

We are not affiliated with any existing platform

We have no connection to any other home swap platform or council-endorsed service. We were built independently because the existing options weren't good enough — and because tenants deserved better. If you've used another platform and been frustrated, you'll notice the difference here.

We are not a paywall

Swapping is always free on MutualExchange.uk. You can browse, list, message, and complete a swap without spending a penny. Premium exists to fund the platform and give you extra tools — it is never a barrier to finding your home.

We are not here to sell your data

We do not sell personal data to third parties. We do not share your information with councils, housing associations, or landlords without your consent. Our business model is a simple, affordable subscription — not data harvesting.
